Electronic Patient Benefit Index Vitiligo
ePBI-Vit
Quick and easy assessment of treatment benefits
What is the ePBI-Vit?
The ePBI-Vit is a tool for patients and their doctors that records patients' subjective assessment of the benefits of their treatment. It is based on the Patient Benefit Index for Vitiligo (PBI-Vit) and helps to set treatment goals and then check whether these goals have been achieved or not over time. It includes questions that measure the extent to which patients feel that their quality of life and symptoms have improved as a result of the therapy. This assessment tool therefore provides important information about patient satisfaction and perceived benefits. It can also be used for quality assurance and joint decision-making. The ePBI-Vit is available as a mobile application for Android and iOS devices and as a web-based online tool.

How to use the ePBI-Vit
At the beginning of therapy, the patient completes a questionnaire about their treatment goals (PNQ: Patient Needs Questionnaire), consisting of 26 questions. On a 5-point scale ranging from “not at all” to “very much,” they rate how important the respective goals are to them or indicate whether they may not apply to them. At the end of therapy (or during its course), the patient completes the Patient Benefit Questionnaire (PBQ) and rates on a 5-point scale from “not at all” to “very much” the extent to which the treatment has helped to achieve the previously defined goals or whether they did not apply to them. The need prior to therapy (PNQ) and the benefit achieved through therapy (PBQ) are converted into a weighted index value, the Patient Benefit Index (PBI).
The total score ranges from 0 (no patient-relevant benefit) to 4 (maximum possible patient-relevant benefit).
Below is an example of the PBI calculation in four steps.
1) Importance of treatment goals
The following questions are designed to help us understand how important the goals listed below are to you personally in the current treatment of your vitiligo.
For each of the following statements, please indicate how important this treatment goal is to you. If a statement does not apply to you, e.g., because you are not experiencing any pain, please check “does not apply to me” in the right-hand column.
2) Benefits of treatment
Please enter here which treatment for vitiligo is currently being carried out (or has been carried out in the last 12 months):
Treatment: _________________ Since when?: ____________
O No treatment for vitiligo in the last 12 months (→ please continue on the next page!)
Please tick each of the following statements to indicate the extent to which the goals have already been achieved by the current treatment and thus the treatment has been beneficial for you. If a statement does not apply to you, e.g. because you did not experience any pain, please tick “not applicable” in the right-hand column.
3) Calculation of PBI

The importance of measuring ePBI-Vit
The Patient Benefit Index is a tool for valid, standardized measurement of patient-relevant therapy benefits in accordance with the requirements of SGB V, GBA, and IQWiG. In addition to PBI-S, the standard version for skin diseases, 14 disease-specific versions have been developed to date. These include PBI-Vit for Vitiligo. The PBI supports efforts in outcomes and healthcare research to reflect the patient perspective in its entirety.
